Painted Kitty Magnets

I found some little blank canvas magnets and these kitties magically appeared on them! I painted random marks of color and then looked for who or what wanted to be painted within the shapes and these guys showed up. They are 2 1/2 inches and are painted with acrylics. I rather like them and can't wait to do more!

Raymi and Red, Painted Cat Ornament

I painted this ornament of our two cats Raymi and Red and stuck it in my son's stocking this year. We got Raymi from a shelter nine years ago for my son's birthday. She was the queen around here until Red came along. He was my mother's cat who came to live with us after she passed away four years ago. He has tried to make friends with Raymi ever since but mostly she will have none of it and will swat at him whenever he comes near. There have been some moments of her allowing him to sleep a foot away and she also "sort of" plays with him but pretends like she's not. We're getting there slowly so there's hope!

Embroidered Ornaments on Felt

I had fun creating these ornaments for gifts this Christmas.  I bought some beautiful blended wool felt in gorgeous colors and love it. I even added beads to one of the ornaments which was tricky but worthwhile.

I plan on experimenting more with the beads as well as creating more "softies," especially animals and maybe dolls, too, we'll see!

New Embroidery Designs - Cats

Where Are You Going?

I finished this one that I had posted earlier.  Not sure where the funky guy came from, but I kinda like his strangeness.  It's called "Where Are You Going?" and is 6".

This second one called "Devoted" is 4".  The split stitch and chain stitch seem to be my go-to stitches.  I love them.

Embroidery in Progress - Cats

I haven't yet decided if I prefer working on linen or felt, with color or no color, so I'm just playing and experimenting with both. I know for sure how much I like using the split stitch for outlining. It's just more interesting than the back stitch and a little more forgiving if stitched crookedly, which is great for a beginner like me!

Mosaic Cats!

I have been creating mosaics for ten years now and if you've been following my work, you know I love cats. I love creating cats in all different styles from realistic pet portraits to fun, patterned cats, from cartoony cats to my favorite, blue cats. Their fun shape, fabulous poses and playful personality keep me creating them again and again. Our family cat, Raymi, has been the model and inspiration for many of these mosaics and is the star of my children's book, The Night Before Christmas.

Here are some of the many cats I've done. To see them in detail, visit my Mosaic Cat Flickr page.

Another mosaic grouted for children's book

This detail is from the mosaic on pages 17 and 18 (I went out of order).  You can see here how I used the photos of my mosaics under clear glass, for the art on the walls.  I like it.  It personalizes the book even more.  Today I will be cutting more wedi and attaching the hangers, as well as putting thinset on their edges, in preparation for grouting some more next week!

New Work - I Gotta Be Me

I am still working on the book, I promise! Nearly finished with mosaic #4, but I had to take some time out to create this mosaic for the SAMA mini salon in March in Chicago (can I even express how excited I am to go?!). It will be my second conference and I've never been to Chicago but have always wanted to. Can't wait to reconnect with all my mosaic buddies and meet some new ones!!

I'm glad to finally make a mosaic with this theme. Not only do I feel strongly about being yourself in your art and not creating for others, only YOU, but too often I see people being affected by the judgments of others and letting them dictate how they feel about themselves, how they act and what they choose to be and do. I like to live like the little orange cat - knowing who I am and not being swayed by what others think I should or should not be, spoken or unspoken! It's a much happier life and I wish the same for all of you!!

The Kitty Bunch

I participated in a Facebook game where the first five to respond receive something created by me. I ended up taking nine names. This was back in April and I have just now gotten around to creating these little guys. After I finished making them, I took a photo of them all together and they reminded me of The Brady Bunch, all looking around at each other, so I thought it only appropriate to name them The Kitty Bunch. They are made with stained glass, millefiori, gold wire, and are each 4x6".

And I'm very happy to say that I am back to working on the book! The next design is in progress and I hope to start cutting glass for it very soon!!
